Air Source Heat Pumps in Stroud and the Valleys

Stroud homes rarely come with a flat back garden. Whether you’re on a stepped plot in Chalford, a terrace in Rodborough or a cottage on the valley floor, we find a spot for the outdoor unit that works, and size the heat pump for the coldest nights in your part of the valley.

Hillside homes

Where a heat pump can go on a sloping Stroud plot

The outdoor unit needs a firm, level base, air around it and room for servicing. On a hillside, these are the options we look at.

A level patio or yard

The simplest spot: a firm, level base close to the house, with space for air to flow around the unit.

Shortest pipe run

A lower or upper terrace

On a stepped garden, the unit can sit on another level. Insulated pipes run underground to the house.

Pipes kept as short as possible

On wall brackets

Where there’s no level ground, the unit can go on brackets with anti-vibration mounts. Not above ground floor on a wall facing a road.

Mounts reduce vibration

Room to service it

Engineers need safe access every year. On steep plots we plan the route in for servicing as well as the spot itself.

Access checked at survey

Rules from the Planning Portal. Permitted development rights can be removed by a planning condition or an Article 4 Direction, so we check your address at the survey.

Cold valley floors

Sizing a heat pump for the bottom of the valley

On still, clear nights, cold air drains downhill and settles on the valley floor. That’s why frost often lingers longer in Brimscombe or Thrupp than on the tops.

It doesn’t stop a heat pump working, but it matters for sizing. Across the Stroud area it drops below freezing for around 357 hours a year, and below −5°C for only about 11. We size each system for a design temperature for your area, and check whether your home sits in a frost pocket.

Heat pumps in Stroud’s conservation areas

Most heat pumps are permitted development, as long as they pass the MCS 020a noise check. Stroud District has 41 conservation areas, so these rules come up often.

  • Conservation areas

The unit can’t go on a wall or roof facing a road, or nearer the road than any part of the house. A rear garden or side wall away from the road usually works.

  • Article 4 areas

Stroud Town Centre, Stroud Top of Town, Bisley, Wotton Under Edge and Frampton on Severn have Article 4 Directions, so check with the council first.

  • Listed buildings

Permitted development doesn’t apply in the grounds of a listed building, so a heat pump there needs planning permission.

Heating with oil or LPG?

7.6% of homes in Stroud district heat with oil or LPG only, mostly in the villages. If your home has no mains gas connection, you can get an extra £1,500 on top of the £7,500 grant until March 2027.

  • £7,500 for homes on mains gas
  • £9,000 for oil or LPG homes with no mains gas

Heat pumps in Stroud: your questions

Slopes, valley floors and old buildings: the questions Stroud homeowners ask us most.

Tricky plot?Call 01452 471031 or book a free survey and we’ll find a spot for the unit.

Can a heat pump go on a sloping or terraced garden?

Yes. The outdoor unit needs a firm, level base, so on a slope we use an existing patio or terrace, build a small level pad, or fix the unit to a wall on brackets. It also needs space around it for air to flow and room for an engineer to service it. We check all three at the survey.

Can a heat pump be fixed to a wall instead of the ground?

Often, yes, on strong wall brackets. Wall brackets can pass vibration into the house, so the unit sits on anti-vibration mounts. Outside conservation areas, permitted development doesn’t allow a unit on a wall facing a road above ground-floor level, and in a conservation area it can’t go on a wall facing a road at all.

Do heat pumps work on a cold valley floor?

Yes. On still, clear nights cold air drains downhill and collects in valley bottoms, so a home at Brimscombe or Chalford Vale can be a little colder than one on the hilltop. Across the Stroud area it’s below −5°C for only about 11 hours a year on average. We size the heat pump for a design temperature for your area, so it keeps up on the coldest nights.

Do Stroud’s Article 4 areas affect heat pumps?

They might. Stroud District Council has Article 4 Directions in five conservation areas: Stroud Town Centre, Stroud Top of Town, Bisley, Wotton Under Edge and Frampton on Severn. They remove certain permitted development rights from some houses, so if you live in one, check with the council whether a heat pump needs an application. See the council’s Article 4 page.

How far can the outdoor unit be from the house?

It can sit away from the house, with insulated pipes running underground to the hot water cylinder. Longer pipe runs lose a little heat and mean more digging, so we keep them as short as the site allows. On a terraced garden, a lower level a few metres away can still work well.

Can I have a heat pump in a mill conversion or flat?

Sometimes. Permitted development covers blocks of flats, with a smaller outdoor unit of up to 0.6 cubic metres, but you’ll usually need the freeholder’s or management company’s permission. Several of Stroud’s old mills are listed or sit in conservation areas, which adds extra checks. If an outdoor unit isn’t possible, we’ll tell you what is.
