Solar Battery Storage in Newport, South Wales
Newport gets a little more sun than most of the areas we cover. A battery keeps the spare for the evening, so you use your own power instead of buying it back. We find a safe spot, fit the battery to new or existing panels, and deal with the South Wales network for you.

Fitting a battery in Newport: what’s different in Wales?
Less than you might think. The battery, the safety rules and the VAT are the same as over the bridge. Two things change: who runs the local network, and which government sets the planning rules.
Newport’s network is run by National Grid Electricity Distribution (South Wales), a different licence area from our Gloucestershire customers, with the same G98 and G99 process. And planning is devolved, so if you’re adding panels as well, the Welsh rules apply rather than England’s. We check both before we design anything.
Newport vs over the bridge
- Same 0% VAT on home batteries, until 31 March 2027
- Same fire safety guidance on where a battery can go
- Same Smart Export Guarantee for the power you export
- Network: National Grid’s South Wales area
- Panels: Welsh Government planning rules
Which way your roof faces matters more in winter
In June, a Newport roof facing east or west makes almost as much as one facing south. In December, it makes less than half.
So a south-facing roof can keep feeding a battery well into autumn, while an east- or west-facing one does most of its storing between spring and early autumn. Either way, the battery is sized to the spare your roof actually makes, and a cheaper overnight rate can top it up in the darker months.
| 4 kWp, roof faces | June | December | Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| South | ≈516 | ≈129 | ≈4,130 |
| South-east | ≈509 | ≈105 | ≈3,870 |
| South-west | ≈515 | ≈106 | ≈3,900 |
| East | ≈476 | ≈57 | ≈3,240 |
| West | ≈485 | ≈57 | ≈3,270 |

From Victorian terraces to new estates
The fire safety guidance for home batteries, BSI PAS 63100, rules out lofts, bedrooms and escape routes. Here’s where a battery usually goes in each kind of Newport home.
Terraces
31% of Newport homes. Usually the back wall, a yard or a utility room.
Semis
Another 31%. A side wall or garage is often ideal, close to the fuse board.
Detached homes
21%. Usually a garage, and more roof for the panels that fill the battery.
Newer estates
A garage or clear outside wall. If your home came with a few panels, a battery stores what they make.

Battery storage in Newport: your questions
Coverage, VAT in Wales, the network, Nest and Newport’s sunshine: here’s what Newport homeowners ask us.
Do you fit batteries in Newport and South Wales?
Yes, we cover Newport and the area around it from our base in Gloucester. Book a free survey and we’ll come and look at your home.
Is there VAT on a home battery in Wales?
No. The zero rate is UK-wide, so it applies in Wales just as it does in England. Batteries installed in homes have 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, whether they’re fitted with new panels, added to existing ones or installed on their own.
Who do you notify about a battery in Newport?
The local network operator, National Grid Electricity Distribution (South Wales). Smaller systems are notified after installation, and bigger ones need approval first, and your panels and battery count together. We send the paperwork for you. You can check any postcode with the Energy Networks Association’s lookup.
Can Nest pay for a home battery?
Nest, the Welsh Government’s home energy scheme, lists heat pumps, insulation and solar panels among the free improvements for eligible households. Batteries aren’t on that list. Nest also gives free, impartial advice on 0808 808 2244, so it’s worth a call to see what you qualify for.
Is Newport sunny enough for a battery to be worth it?
Newport does well. A 4 kWp south-facing system there makes about 4,130 kWh a year, a little more than in Gloucester. In June that’s around 17 kWh on an average day, more than most homes use in daylight, so there’s plenty to store. In December it’s nearer 4 kWh a day, and an overnight tariff does more of the work.
