In the garden
Away from the lane and neighbours’ windows, with space around it for air to flow.
Usually no applicationNearly one in five Cotswold homes heats with oil or LPG. If yours is one of them, an air source heat pump means no more deliveries or tank to look after, and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme takes up to £9,000 off the price.
We also handle the things that make Cotswold homes different: thick stone walls, listed buildings and conservation areas.
Fully accredited & trusted
The Cotswolds has more than four times the share of oil and LPG homes as England as a whole.

The heat pump replaces the boiler, and the tank is no longer needed.
Most LPG tanks belong to the supplier, so it’s mainly a case of ending the contract.
Old stone houses lose heat differently from modern ones, and they need to breathe. That shapes the insulation advice as much as the heat pump.
Cotswold District Council recommends breathable insulation for traditional buildings, such as wood fibre or lambswool, so moisture can still escape from the walls. On a listed building, consent can be needed for internal work as well as external, and the council suggests using its pre-application advice service.
How we plan a heat pump for a stone home
Under permitted development, as long as the unit passes the MCS 020a noise check.
Away from the lane and neighbours’ windows, with space around it for air to flow.
Usually no applicationPermitted development covers buildings within the grounds of your house too, so a barn or garage wall can work.
Not in a listed building’s groundsA detached house can have two heat pumps under permitted development, both included in the noise check.
Detached houses onlyNot on a wall or roof facing a road, and not nearer the road than any part of the house.
144 conservation areasRules from the Planning Portal. Permitted development rights can be removed by a planning condition or an Article 4 Direction, so we check your address at the survey.

Room-by-room heat loss, where the unit and cylinder can go, and any listed building or conservation area checks.
We apply to Ofgem for £7,500, or £9,000 if your home has no mains gas.
Outdoor unit, cylinder, any radiator changes and controls. The old boiler comes out.
Your MCS certificate, the grant taken off your invoice, and a walk-through of the controls.

More for Cotswold homes
Oil, LPG, stone walls and planning: the questions Cotswold homeowners ask us most.
Yes, and it’s one of the most common swaps we do in rural homes. The heat pump replaces the boiler, a hot water cylinder replaces any combi, and the oil tank is no longer needed. If your home has no mains gas, the grant is £9,000 until March 2027.
Most LPG tanks are owned by the gas supplier, so once the heat pump is running you’d end your supply contract and arrange for them to collect the tank. Check your contract for notice periods before you book. If you also cook with LPG, you can keep a smaller supply for the hob or switch to an electric hob.
Not by itself. The permitted development rules for air source heat pumps add extra limits in conservation areas and World Heritage Sites, not in National Landscapes. But Cotswold District has 144 conservation areas, so many village homes do have the extra rule: the unit can’t go on a wall or roof facing a road, or nearer the road than the house. Listed buildings need permission.
It can be, if it’s sized properly. We work out the heat loss of every room, including thick stone walls, tall ceilings and draughty windows. Big homes sometimes need a larger unit or two units working together, and a detached house can have two heat pumps under permitted development. Fixing the worst draughts first can make a big difference to the size you need.
Breathable materials. Cotswold District Council’s guidance says the most effective insulation for a traditional building is breathable, such as wood fibre board, lambswool, aerogel or cellulose, so moisture in old stone walls can still escape. On a listed building, listed building consent can be needed for internal work too. See the council’s retrofit guidance.
GOV.UK says the extra £1,500 for homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas is available until March 2027. Grants are applied for by your installer before the work, and the heat pump has to be installed within 120 days of applying, so it’s worth starting early. See GOV.UK and Ofgem’s guidance.
