Air Source Heat Pumps Installed Across Swindon

Nearly 8 in 10 Swindon homes heat with mains gas, and most have room for a heat pump. Before we fit one, we check three things: your electricity supply, where the outdoor unit can go, and which grant you’re due.

Your supply

Is your electricity supply ready for a heat pump?

Swindon’s local network is run by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN). For most homes, connecting a heat pump is simple paperwork, which we handle.

The exception is a looped supply, where two neighbouring homes share one service cable. SSEN says these are still found in many older homes, particularly terraced and semi-detached houses, and that one may need removing before a heat pump goes in. It’s often hard to tell if the cable is underground, so we check at the survey.

Looped supplies: what to know

  • Most likely in older terraced and semi-detached homes.
  • Hard to spot if the cable is underground. We check at the survey.
  • SSEN can often unloop free of charge for a typical household supply.
  • Charges may apply for a bigger supply. SSEN explains any costs first.

Planning

Heat pumps in the Railway Village and Old Town

Swindon’s conservation areas, including Old Town, Wroughton and Highworth, follow the usual rule: the outdoor unit can’t go on a wall or roof facing a road, or nearer the road than the house.

The Railway Village has an Article 4 Direction as well, and the council says planning permission is needed for solar panels there. Check with the council before planning a heat pump, and remember that listed cottages need consent for work to the building.

Moved into a new build with a gas boiler?

Homes still being built by the developer can’t get the grant, but if you’ve moved into a finished new build with a gas boiler, you may be able to get £7,500 off a heat pump to replace it.

Heat pumps in Swindon: your questions

Shared supplies, new builds and the Railway Village: here’s what Swindon homeowners ask us.

Not sure if your supply is shared?Call 01452 471031 and we’ll check at a free survey.

What is a looped electricity supply?

It’s where two neighbouring homes share one electricity service cable from the network. They’re no longer installed, but many older terraced and semi-detached houses still have one. A shared cable may not have enough capacity for a heat pump in both homes, so SSEN may need to give your home its own connection first. We check at your survey.

Is unlooping my supply free?

Often, yes. SSEN says that in many cases it can unloop a supply free of charge, usually for a typical household supply of up to 100 amps per phase. Charges may apply if you need extra work or a bigger supply, and SSEN will explain any costs before work starts. See SSEN’s looped service page.

Can I have a heat pump in the Railway Village?

Possibly, but check with the council first. Swindon Borough Council says the Railway Village has an Article 4 Direction, which means planning permission is needed for solar panels there, and it may affect other changes too. Listed cottages need listed building consent for work to the building. We’ll help you check before you commit to anything.

Can I get the grant on a new-build home in Swindon?

It depends. Homes still being built by the developer aren’t eligible, but if you’ve moved into a finished new build that has a gas boiler, you may be able to get the £7,500 grant to replace it. Many newer estates around Swindon were built with gas boilers, so it’s worth asking.

Is a heat pump a good fit for a 1980s or 1990s estate home?

Often, yes. Homes from those decades usually have cavity walls, double glazing and simple layouts, which make for a straightforward swap from gas. We still measure every room, as insulation varies a lot between homes, and some radiators may need upsizing.
