Solar Panels for Swindon Homes, Old and New
Swindon’s homes range from the Great Western Railway’s Railway Village to the newest streets at Wichelstowe and Tadpole Garden Village. Most can have solar without a planning application. A few can’t, and we’ll tell you which.
A 4 kWp south-facing system in Swindon generates about 4,080 kWh a year, and around 139 kWh even in December.

Solar panels on Swindon’s newer estates
West Swindon, Abbey Meads, Priory Vale, Wichelstowe and Tadpole Garden Village are full of homes with simple, modern roofs, which suit solar well.
Simple roofs, quick installs
Unbroken roof slopes with few chimneys or dormers make for straightforward layouts. Most home systems are fitted in a day.
Every direction works
Estate roofs face all ways. East- and west-facing panels still produce about 80% of a south-facing system.
Panels from the developer?
Some newer homes already have a small system. If there’s roof space, we can add more panels or a battery.
Charge your car from the roof
Pair your panels with a solar-aware EV charger and use your own electricity to drive.

Solar panels in the Railway Village, Old Town and Swindon’s villages
Swindon’s older streets have extra rules. Here’s where they apply.
The Railway Village
Built for the Great Western Railway’s workforce and now part of Swindon’s Railway Conservation Area. An Article 4 Direction means planning permission is needed for solar panels.
Bishopstone
The Bishopstone Conservation Area also has an Article 4 Direction, so solar panels there need planning permission too.
Old Town and other conservation areas
In areas like Swindon Old Town, Devizes Road, Prospect Place, Town Gardens, rooftop solar is usually permitted, but not on a wall or roof enclosure facing a road, and flat-roof systems need prior approval.

Swindon’s grid is run by SSEN
Unlike most of the areas we cover, Swindon’s local network is run by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, not National Grid. We deal with SSEN for you.
- Most home systems: notified after installation
- Larger systems or big batteries: approval first
- MCS certificate for Smart Export Guarantee payments
Solar Together or a direct quote?
Swindon Borough Council and Wiltshire Council have run Solar Together, a group-buying scheme, and over 600 Swindon households have bought through it. Rounds open at set times.
A direct quote is available any time, from a local team you can meet at the survey. Either way, compare the panels, inverter, battery and warranties side by side.

More for Swindon homes
Solar panels in Swindon: your questions
Planning, council schemes, SSEN and new-build homes: here’s what Swindon homeowners ask us.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels in the Railway Village?
Yes. Swindon Borough Council says that in the Swindon Railway Village Area and the Bishopstone Conservation Area, Article 4 Directions mean planning permission will be required to install solar panels. Listed homes need planning permission and listed building consent. Elsewhere in Swindon, most rooftop solar doesn’t need an application. See the council’s solar planning advice.
Is there a Swindon council solar panel scheme?
Swindon Borough Council and Wiltshire Council have run Solar Together, a group-buying scheme with iChoosr. The most recent round on the council’s website took registrations from 2 June to 8 August 2025. You don’t have to wait for a round, though: you can get a quote from any MCS certified installer at any time and compare. See the council’s Solar Together page.
Do you have to tell SSEN about solar panels in Swindon?
Yes, but we do it for you. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) runs the local network in Swindon. Most home systems are notified to SSEN after installation. Larger systems, or solar with a big battery, need SSEN’s approval before we fit them.
Will fitting solar panels affect my new-build warranty?
It’s worth checking first. New homes usually come with a warranty, and some warranty providers and developers want to know about work on the roof. Ask your developer or warranty provider before you book; we can give you the details they ask for, such as how the panels are fixed.
Is Swindon sunny enough for solar panels?
Yes. A 4 kWp south-facing system in Swindon generates about 4,080 kWh a year, with around 490 kWh in June and 139 kWh in December, among the highest of the areas we cover. Facing south-east or south-west it’s about 3,840 to 3,860 kWh, and facing east or west about 3,230 to 3,250 kWh.
Can I charge my electric car from solar panels?
Yes. With a solar-aware charger, such as a zappi, your car can charge from surplus solar during the day instead of exporting it. It works best if the car is at home in daylight hours. See our EV charger installation page.
