Swindon Borough Council says over 600 Swindon households have taken part in the group-buying scheme. If you’re one of them, a battery can store the power your panels make while you’re out, with 0% VAT on home batteries.
Swindon’s local network is run by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN). For most homes, adding a battery is simple paperwork, which we handle.
Smaller systems are notified after installation; bigger ones apply first. Your panels and battery count together, so adding a battery to an existing system can change which applies.
The fire safety guidance for home batteries, BSI PAS 63100, rules out lofts, bedrooms and escape routes. Here’s what that leaves in each type of home.

Solar Together, SSEN, shared supplies, new builds and electric cars: here’s what Swindon homeowners ask us.
Usually, yes. Most systems can take a battery, either alongside the existing inverter or with a hybrid inverter. We check your system and wiring first. A battery added to existing panels in a home has 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), not National Grid as in Gloucester or Worcester. Smaller systems are notified after installation, and bigger ones need approval first, and your panels and battery count together. We deal with SSEN for you.
Not usually on its own. A looped supply is where two neighbouring homes share one service cable. SSEN says one may need separating when you add a heat pump or EV charger, so if a battery is part of a bigger upgrade, we check. SSEN can often unloop a supply free of charge.
Yes. Newer homes often have a garage or a clear outside wall, which are good spots for a battery. If your home is still under a builder’s warranty, check whether it says anything about electrical alterations. If your new build came with a few panels, a battery can store what they make while you’re out.
It can cover some of it. A home battery holds much less than a car, so it won’t fill one, but it can add stored solar or off-peak power to a top-up. We can plan the battery and an EV charger together.
