What a good heat pump quote should include

Whoever you get quotes from, check for these. They’re what decides how well a heat pump runs, and what it costs to run.

What to checkWhy it matters
A room-by-room heat loss surveyIt’s how the heat pump and radiators are sized for your home, rather than guessed from its floor area.
The heat pump model and outputToo small and it struggles on cold days; too big and it costs more and can run less efficiently.
The hot water cylinderSized for how many people live in the home and how much hot water you use.
Radiator changesWhich rooms, if any, need a bigger radiator to stay warm at lower flow temperatures.
ControlsWeather compensation and clear controls help the heat pump run steadily and efficiently.
MCS certification and the grantOnly MCS certified installers can apply for the £7,500 grant on your behalf. Ours is NAP68548.
Warranty and servicingWhat’s covered, for how long, and whether a yearly service is needed.

Planning

Heat pump planning rules for Worcester homes

Most heat pumps are permitted development, as long as they pass the MCS 020a noise check. Where the unit goes is what matters.

  • An outdoor unit of up to 1.5m³ on a house, or 0.6m³ on a block of flats.
  • Not on a pitched roof, and at least 1m from the edge of a flat roof.
  • Outside conservation areas, not above ground floor on a wall facing a road.
  • In a conservation area, not on a wall or roof facing a road, or nearer the road than the house.
  • Not within the grounds of a listed building without permission.

Rules from the Planning Portal. Permitted development rights can be removed by a planning condition or an Article 4 Direction, so we check your address at the survey.

Worcester’s conservation areas

Worcester has 19 conservation areas, from the Historic City to Riverside. Three also have Article 4 Directions, which withdraw rights such as altering a front elevation:

  • York Place (Britannia Square)
  • Shrubbery Avenue
  • Park Avenue

If you’re in one of these, we’ll check with the council before planning anything on the front of the house.

Worcester FAQs

Heat pumps in Worcester: your questions

Quotes, sizing, brands and planning: the questions Worcester homeowners ask us.

Comparing quotes?Call 01452 471031 and we’ll talk you through ours line by line.

What should a heat pump quote include?

A good quote is based on a room-by-room heat loss survey, and names the heat pump model and its output in kW, the hot water cylinder size, any radiators that need changing, the controls, and the warranty. It should show the £7,500 grant taken off. If two quotes differ a lot, compare those details side by side.

Do you install Worcester Bosch heat pumps?

Worcester Bosch is based at Warndon in Worcester, and its range includes heat pumps as well as boilers. Whatever the brand, the sizing and installation make the biggest difference to how well it runs.

What size heat pump does my house need?

It depends on how much heat your home loses on a cold day, not just its floor area. Two houses the same size can need very different heat pumps, depending on insulation, windows and draughts. That’s why we do a room-by-room heat loss calculation before recommending a size. Too small and it struggles; too big and it costs more and can run less efficiently.

Can a heat pump go on the front of my house in Worcester?

Sometimes. Outside conservation areas, permitted development allows a unit on a front wall at ground-floor level, but not higher if that wall faces a road. In Worcester’s 19 conservation areas, it can’t go on a wall facing a road at all. York Place, Shrubbery Avenue and Park Avenue also have Article 4 Directions, so check with the council there. See the council’s conservation areas page.

How cold does Worcester get for a heat pump?

Not cold enough to worry about. Between 2005 and 2023, Worcester averaged around 341 hours a year below freezing and only about 12 hours below −5°C. The coldest hour in those 19 years was about −11°C, in December 2017. We size each heat pump for a design temperature for your area.

Can landlords get the heat pump grant?

Yes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is open to owners of a property they rent out to tenants, as well as homeowners, second homes and businesses. The property needs to be replacing fossil fuel heating, and you’ll need your tenants’ cooperation for the survey and installation.
